Infographic Spotlight on Applied Linguistic Anthropology
Focus: Word Choice
This Infographic project asks you to research the importance of word choice (focusing on a specific word or words) as it relates to a topic connected to language and culture. The goal of this assignment is to highlight the importance of word choice and the consequences of chosen words in spoken and/or written form. As you have learned in this course, there are numerous contexts or topics which illustrate the connections between language and culture. Choose a context to research that interests you. Possible topics for this assignment include (but are not limited to) the following:
Language and power
Language and ethnicity
Language and class
Language and politics
Language and framing (for example, protester/looter, hurricane victim/criminal, assertive/pushy, etc.,)
Language and doublespeak
Language and gender
Language and bilingualism
Language of inclusion or exclusion
You will create visual slides for your Infographic using PowerPoint. The minimum requirement is 3 slides; you may turn in more than 3 slides if you wish. There is NO penalty for turning in more than 3 slides.
You MUST include all of the elements listed below. The following is one way to organize your slides:
